About This Map

Each county is shaded by its unsolved homicide rate - the share of murders recorded between 1976 and 2024 that were never cleared by an arrest or exceptional means.

0–25% unsolved
25–50% unsolved
50–75% unsolved
75–100% unsolved
Fewer than 10 homicides - excluded

Filters: Use the decade buttons to see how clearance rates have changed over time. Counties with fewer than 10 homicides in the selected period are shown in gray.

Data: FBI Supplementary Homicide Report (SHR), 1976–2024, via the Murder Accountability Project. Includes all reported homicides classified as murder or non-negligent manslaughter.

Limitations: SHR participation is voluntary. Some agencies have submitted inconsistently over the years. Gray counties had fewer than 10 recorded homicides in the selected period and are excluded to avoid small-sample distortion.
